Most self-improvement declares war on the self and then calls the casualties growth. This is the other option.
The ego is not a villain to beat. It is the part of you that has been doing its best with bad information, and it responds better to being understood than to being fought. That is the whole idea. Everything below is where it comes from.
Beyond good and bad
Nothing here gets sorted into good and bad. Behaviour is skillful or unskillful — it either moves you toward the life you want, or it does not. That applies to your own behaviour, and it applies to the behaviour of people who have hurt you.
This is not forgiveness and it is not permission. It is the only frame that lets you look at something clearly enough to change it. A verdict ends the inquiry. A description keeps it open.
The Shadow
Carl Jung's term for the part of the psyche that holds everything you have refused: the traits, appetites and fears you decided were not yours. Refusing them does not remove them. It removes them from view, and what you cannot see, you cannot steer.
None of this is indulgence. It is inventory. You are looking for the parts of yourself you sent away, and for the reason you sent them — which is usually that someone else needed you to. You are not going down there to fight anything. You are going down there to find out what it wanted.
The Governor
The Stoics worked from one division: some things are up to you, and most are not. Everything Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius and Seneca wrote about anger, grief, ambition and death follows from sorting a situation into those two piles honestly, and then acting only in the first one.
The Governor is the part of you that does the sorting. It is built the way any capacity is built — reflection, discomfort taken on purpose, and choosing a response often enough that the choosing gets faster than the reacting.
The Witness
Alan Watts, and the contemplative traditions he drew on, point at something simpler and harder: the awareness that notices a thought is not the thought. You can watch anxiety arrive without becoming it.
The Witness is the least dramatic of the three and does the most work. It is what makes the other two possible. You cannot take inventory of something you are currently standing inside, and you cannot govern a reaction you have already turned into.
Four sentences we keep coming back to
Befriend it. Do not destroy it.
The thing you keep trying to cut out is load-bearing.
Start it in the wrong week.
There is no version of the calendar where the conditions are finally correct. Waiting is also a choice.
Grief does not accept prepayment.
Rehearsing the ending in advance does not reduce the bill. You pay twice, and the first payment buys nothing.
Half of this was never assigned to me.
Some of what you are carrying was handed to you by someone who did not want to carry it any more. Putting it down is not abandonment. It is an accurate reading of the job.
What this is not
Ego Friendly does not offer therapy, and nothing here is a substitute for it. There is no method, no programme and no transformation on offer.
We make shirts, prints and stickers with these sentences on them. That is the whole shop. The work is yours.
